CHANGES IN SPOKANE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Many changes are underway in Spokane Public Schools. This year’s work plan focuses on improving the middle school experience, increasing math and science achievements, and expanding academic support to help prepare students for success after graduation. The presenters will educate you about the levy renewal scheduled for the February 14, 2012 election. Superintendent Nancy Stowell and Associate Superintendent Mark Anderson will share the district's work with us and explain the impact of the levy, which represents nearly 23 percent of the district's budget. From November 2010 to March 2011, Ms. Adriane P. Borgias completed a Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship in Bangalore, India. As a participant in the Environmental Leadership Program, Ms. Borgias worked on a project to develop an on-line resource of environmental information. During her stay she had the opportunity to travel throughout the country. Ms. Borgias will share with you her journey and some of her observations about modern India: a country poised to become a global superpower by 2025. Ms. Borgias has worked as an environmental professional for more than 30 years. Donations appreciated.

HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN FLAG

John Caskey is a vexillologist (flag historian), member of the North American Vexillological Association, curator of the Spokane Flag Museum and the author of the book "100 Historic Flags of America". Join us on February 24 from 11:00 to 11:45 as John presents a history of the American Flag from its earliest beginnings to the present day fifty star, thirteen stripe banner. You’ll come away with dozens of little known facts about our country’s flag. You just thought you knew Old Glory!
