SYMBOLS AND SYMBOLISM AT ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL

On this tour we will identify the saint or meaning of the symbols we
see. For example, each of the 12 apostles had at least one symbol.
Each of the four evangelists (gospel writers) had a symbol. And
since two of the evangelists were apostles, they had at least two
each. We will also learn all the church building terms (nave,
narthex, transept, etc.). You will see the one item that gives this
church the right to be called a cathedral. And you will see a
lych-gate, a columbarium, and much more. After the hour and a half
in the church, we will have lunch (on your own) somewhere nearby.
You may also want to bring a pair of binoculars.

NORTH IDAHO/SILVER VALLEY TOUR ***DIFFICULT

After a coffee stop in Coeur d’Alene, we’ll go to the Cataldo
Mission, the oldest standing building in Idaho. After a short drive
to Kellogg, we tour the Crystal Gold Mine. Then it’s off to the
Snake Pit for lunch and yarns spun by Blossom, a colorful local
character and raconteur. After lunch we’ll drive to Murray to visit
the Sprag Pole Museum, the quaint post office, and Pioneer Cemetery
to pay our respects at the grave of Molly B’Dam. Finally, we’ll
drive over scenic Dobson Pass and down into Wallace.

PRESERVATION AND RESERVATION *** DIFFICULT

The Wolf Education Research Center offers visitors a chance to see
the Owyhee and Sawtooth packs and learn about the important work and
research that is done towards preserving a species and the lands
that are these animal’s home. We’ll cover about 1/4 mile walking
trail during the course of the tour and have the opportunity to
observe the wolves from observation decks. Also we’ll enjoy an owl
demonstration and learn some Nez Perce history. While we are in the
area we will visit the Nez Perce NHS. Did you know that the
Appaloosa was an ancient breed of horse developed by the Nez Perce?
You will learn about Chief Joseph and the culture of the Nez Perce,
see some historic buildings and archeological remains (some over
11,000 years old) of the old settlement at the confluence of the
Clearwater and Lapwai Creek. Lunch on your own.

HARRINGTON GARDEN TOUR ** MODERATE

This is it! This is the premier garden tour of the summer. On this
tour of the newly renovated opera house (in a 100-year old bank
building) in Harrington by Ed, our host for the day. Then we’ll
visit two gardens in town, including Ed’s. And if viewing his garden
doesn’t make your jaw drop, nothing will. Following those visits, we
will leave town to view another beautiful garden. We will have lunch
(included) on the veranda of the home of the lady of the manor. We
will also see one more garden (for a total of four for the day)
before taking off for Davenport for some ice cream. Alert: If you
have the slightest inkling you would love to go on this tour, you
had better sign up today-tomorrow the tour will be sold out. There
will be only one van going, and just for one day. The next tour
won’t be until 2011.

HIKE TO PULASKI TUNNEL *** DIFFICULT

The Great Fire of 1910 was the largest fire in U.S. History and
scorched three million acres in 10 national forests of the
Northwest. Eighty-seven people, including 78 firefighters, lost
their lives. At one critical point, firefighting crew chief “Big Ed”
Pulaski forced his 45-man crew into the Nicholson Mine. They all
lost consciousness, but most of them survived, thanks to the
tough-mindedness of Big Ed. The mine is now known as Pulaski Tunnel.
It’s near Wallace, ID. On this four-mile hike, we will walk two
miles along the west fork of Placer Creek, up a cool canyon, past
waterfalls, cascades, and varied flora. After visiting the tunnel,
we’ll hike back. You will enjoy the scenery, probably even more than
the exercise.

GRAND COULEE #2 **MODERATE
Thursday, August 26 ~ 3pm - Midnight
Tour Leader: Ron Krueger
Our first stop will be Dry Falls, the skeleton of one of the
greatest waterfalls in geologic history. Our second stop will be
Lake Lenore Caves, formed by the great floods during the last Ice
Age. Then we will drive in the ancient riverbed of the Columbia to
the town of Coulee Dam. This is a dazzling show which tells the
story of the Columbia River and the creation of the dam. This will
be an opportunity to see some of the fascinating results of the
great floods from the last Ice Age.
